Mixed team
In the mixed team event a man and a woman from the same nation shoot as one team. Every team shot is the two partners’ shots added together. Here is one shot from a final.
Think first: Pair A shoots 10.5 and 9.6. Pair B shoots 10.0 and 10.0. Which pair gains on this shot?
- Pair A, by 0.1
- Pair B, by 0.1
- Neither: it is a tie
Qualification
Each athlete fires 30 shots in 40 minutes, so the team total is out of 600. Qualification is scored in whole rings, just like the individual match. The best 4 teams go to the final.
The final, from 2026 to LA28
The mixed team final changed for 2026 and keeps this format for LA28. It now works like a smaller version of the individual final, with team totals.
- 3 series of 5 shots per athlete, 250 seconds per series.
- 9 single shots per athlete, 50 seconds each.
- After shot 18 the lowest team is out in 4th place.
- After shot 21 the bronze is decided.
- After shot 24, gold and silver. Decimal scoring; ties go to a shoot-off.
Each team may have one coach and one 30-second time-out. Step through a simulated final: notice how long all four teams stay in it.
Think first: The mixed team final world record is 488.4 (Yao Qianxun / Hu Kai (CHN), Hangzhou 2026). Each athlete fired 24 shots. What did each athlete average per shot?
What it replaced: medal matches
At Paris 2024 the medals were decided differently. After qualification, the top two teams met in a gold medal match and the next two in a bronze medal match. A match was played in rounds. The team with the higher combined score in a round won 2 points; a tied round gave 1 point each. The first team to 16 points won.
At Paris 2024 it took 581 in qualification to reach the gold match and 579 for the bronze match. Serbia beat Türkiye 16–14 for gold; India beat Korea 16–10 for bronze.
Think first: Old match format. Team X wins round 1 by 0.1. Team Y wins round 2 by 2.0. What is the match score?
- 2–2
- Team Y leads 4–0
- Team Y leads 2–0 because its margin was bigger
- Paris 2024 — Top 4 teams split into a gold match and a bronze match · Rounds worth 2 points (1 each for a tie) · First to 16 points wins · A big round counts the same as a narrow one
- 2026 and LA28 — One final with 4 teams · 3 × 5 shots, then 9 single shots per athlete · 4th out after shot 18, bronze at 21, gold at 24 · Every decimal adds to the total
Who can make up a team
At LA28 a mixed team is formed from athletes already entered in the individual events, and a nation can enter at most 2 mixed teams. World Championships also allow 2 mixed teams per nation.
Think first: At LA28 your nation has two men’s air pistol places and one women’s. How many mixed teams can it enter?
- None
- One
- Two
The event first appeared at Tokyo 2020, won by China (Jiang Ranxin / Pang Wei). Serbia (Arunović / Mikec) won in Paris 2024.
- Team shots are both partners added together. A strong shot can cover a partner’s weak one.
- Qualification: 30 shots each in 40 minutes, whole rings. Top 4 teams reach the final.
- Final (2026 and LA28): 3 × 5 shots then 9 single shots per athlete. 4th out after 18, bronze at 21, gold at 24. Decimals.
- One coach and one 30-second time-out per team.
- It replaced the Paris 2024 medal matches to 16 points, where rounds counted and margins did not.
