Inside the Olympic final

Paris 2024, women’s 10 m air pistol qualification. Sixty shots each, and at the end three shooters are level on 577 for 8th place, the last spot in the final. Only one of them gets in.

Think first: How was the 8th place decided?

  • A shoot-off between the three
  • Most inner tens
  • The higher last 10-shot series

Look at the qualification rows first. Only 7 points separated the top men’s qualifier from 8th. 577 is 9.62 per shot, and it was only just enough. The tie-break rules are explained in Tie-breaks.

Think first: Xie Yu won the men’s final with 240.9 over 24 decimal shots. What was his average per shot?

Read the bronze score carefully

Think first: Monna took bronze with 218.6; Maldini took silver with 240.0. Did Monna shoot much worse per shot?

  • Yes, more than a point per shot worse
  • No. Bronze is decided after 22 shots, so 218.6 is about 9.94 per shot.
  • Bronze scores are halved in the final

For context, the 2025 World Championship in Cairo was won with 243.7 (Samrat Rana) and 243.0 (Yao Qianxun). The world records sit at 246.5 and 246.9. The Olympic winning scores were good, not extreme. The difference was who held their level on the day.

The pressure

Everything about an Olympic final is designed to be watched: music, a crowd that is encouraged to be loud, your aim shown live on a screen. Eight people who all shoot well enough to win, and three medals.

The research points one way: under pressure, process beats outcome. Elite air pistol shooters who used an individual pre-shot routine gained about 2.5 points in one study, while the rest of their league stayed flat. A goal like “run my routine every shot” is something you control. “Shoot 243” is not.

Think first: Shot 19. You have just shot a 9.1 and dropped into the elimination spot. What is your best next thought?

  • Work out exactly what score you need to survive
  • Accept it, one cue word, and run the routine for the next shot
  • Shoot faster to get the pressure over with

The whole road

You started this course with a target card and an 11.5 mm ring. Here is the honest picture of the road from there.

Nobody has measured how long it takes to reach Olympic level in air pistol. Anecdotes suggest roughly 6–10 years of serious training. The average Olympic shooter at Paris 2024 was 30.

That is a long time, and most shooters who start will never shoot an Olympic final. But every step on the way is real. A clean trigger release is a skill you keep for life. A 540 is a fine score at your club. An MQS on your record means you shot at international level. And the shooter who finally walks into the Olympic final does the same things you practised from the first lessons: aligns the sights, settles the hold, and presses through a clean release. Twenty-four times, without letting the last one decide the next.

  • Paris 2024: 577 reached both finals, and inner tens decided who got the last place.
  • An Olympic winner averages about 10.0–10.2 per decimal shot. Bronze is decided after 22 shots, so compare per-shot averages, not totals.
  • Under pressure, process goals and a fixed routine beat chasing the score.
  • The road: clean fundamentals, honest training data, the MQS, a quota for your NOC, selection, then one final of 24 shots.
