The ISSF circuit
Your country sends five shooters to a World Cup. Only three of them can win a medal. Travel, entry fees and hotels cost the same for all five. So why send the other two?
Think first: A nation enters five athletes in one World Cup event, but only three can win medals. What do the other two get out of it?
- Nothing official. They are only there to train.
- They shoot “ranking points only” (RPO): no medal, but their result still earns World Ranking points.
- A medal, but only if they beat all three of their teammates.
A pyramid with two owners
Every 10 m pistol career climbs the same ladder. The bottom three steps belong to your national federation: club matches, regional or state championships, and the national championship. Your federation sets the rules there, picks its teams, and applies for your ISSF ID when you are ready to go further.
Above that sits the ISSF calendar, and at the very top the Olympic Games, which the IOC runs. Tap each tier to see what it is and who gets in.
Three ISSF levels
The ISSF sorts its own competitions into three levels. The level depends on what is at stake, not on how big the event is.
| Level | Competitions |
| Level 1 | World Championships; World Cups and continental championships that award Olympic quota places |
| Level 2 | Other World Cups, Junior World Championships, other continental championships |
| Level 3 | Grand Prix |
Competition levels are defined in the ISSF General Regulations. Club, regional and national matches are outside these levels and run by national federations.
Think first: Which of these is a Level 1 competition?
- A Grand Prix with 80 starters
- A continental championship that awards LA28 quota places
- The Junior World Championship
The calendar repeats on a four-year beat
The ISSF schedule is built around the Olympics:
An all-discipline World Championship every four years, two years after the Games. This cycle’s is Doha, 1–14 November 2026.
In the other non-Olympic years, a separate Rifle/Pistol World Championship. The next is Daegu 2027.
Junior World Championships every two years, in even years, with separate discipline championships in the odd years.
A season of World Cups, closed by the World Cup Final: Rome, 3–8 December 2026.
Think first: Doha 2026 is an all-discipline World Championship, two years after Paris. Following the same rule, when should the next all-discipline World Championship be?
- 2027
- 2028
- 2030
Entry limits, RPO and the 15-starter rule
Places at the big events are limited per nation, which is why your federation decides who goes:
World Championships: at most 3 athletes per nation in each individual event, and 2 mixed teams.
Other championships: up to 5 per nation per event, but only 3 can win medals. The other two are RPO.
There is also a minimum field size. An event needs at least 15 starters to award medals (10 in junior events). Below 15, it also gives no ranking points.
Think first: A World Cup event ends up with only 12 starters. What happens?
- Medals and ranking points as usual
- The match is shot, but no medals are awarded and no ranking points are given
- The event is merged with the junior event to reach 15
Ask your federation early which ISSF events it plans to enter and how it picks athletes. Places are per nation, so the selection happens at home, long before the entry deadline.
Next, the paperwork that gets you onto an ISSF start list: ISSF ID & entries. Ranking points per level are in World ranking points.
- Club, regional and national competitions belong to your national federation. ISSF events start at Grand Prix level.
- Level 1 = World Championships plus World Cups and continental championships that award Olympic places. Level 2 = other World Cups, Junior World Championships and continental championships. Level 3 = Grand Prix.
- All-discipline World Championship every four years, two years after the Games (Doha 2026). Rifle/Pistol World Championship in other non-Olympic years (Daegu 2027).
- World Championships: 3 per nation per event. Other championships: 5, of whom only 3 can win medals. The rest shoot RPO.
- Medals need at least 15 starters (10 for juniors). Under 15 there are no ranking points either.
