World ranking points
Two shooters, one season. Shooter A wins a World Cup and does nothing else all year. Shooter B never reaches a podium but finishes 8th at four World Cups. Every field had more than 50 starters.
Think first: Who ranks higher in the ISSF World Ranking?
- Shooter A: one win beats any number of 8th places
- Shooter B
- They are level
Points depend on the event and the field
Every ISSF result earns points from a fixed table. Two things set the value: how important the event is, and how many athletes started.
| Event | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 8th | 9th |
| Olympic Games | 4000 | 3500 | 3000 | 1700 | 1400 |
| World Championship | 3000 | 2625 | 2250 | 1275 | 1050 |
| World Cup or continental with quotas, 50+ starters | 2000 | 1750 | 1500 | 850 | 700 |
| same, 30+ starters | 1000 | 880 | 760 | ||
| same, 15+ starters | 500 | 440 | 380 | ||
| Grand Prix or continental without quotas, 50+ | 500 | 440 | 380 |
The table shows the places our sources list. Places 4 to 7 earn points too; the full table is in the ISSF Ranking System. With fewer than 15 starters there are no points at all.
Look at the World Cup rows. The same win is worth 2000, 1000 or 500 points depending only on how many people turned up. A crowded field is harder to win, so it pays more.
Best four, rolling 365 days
The World Ranking is published every month. It counts only your best four results from the last 365 days. Results outside the window drop off, however good they were. A fifth result only helps if it beats one of your current four.
Build a season below and watch which results count.
Think first: Your last 365 days: World Championship 3rd, World Cup 1st, World Cup 2nd, World Cup 8th and a Grand Prix win. Every field had 50+ starters. What is your World Ranking total?
Think first: You won a World Cup on 10 April 2026, your best result ever. Does it still count on the ranking list published in May 2027?
- Yes. It stays until four better results replace it.
- No. By May 2027 it is more than 365 days old.
- Only if you have fewer than four results
RPO athletes: 9th-place points
Remember the athletes who shoot ranking points only (RPO) at World Cups. They cannot win medals, but they can still score points. If an RPO athlete finishes in the top 8, they receive the points for 9th place.
Think first: You shoot RPO at a World Cup with 60 starters and finish 2nd overall. How many ranking points do you get?
- 1750
- 700
- 0
The Olympic Ranking is a separate list
During the LA28 qualification period the ISSF keeps a second list: the Olympic Ranking. It counts your best 10 results from Olympic qualifying events between 31 Jul 2026 and 1 May 2028. At the end, it awards one LA28 place per sex. Unlike most quota places, that one goes to the named athlete, not to the nation. More in Quotas belong to nations.
Exactly which events count for the Olympic Ranking, and with which points, is set out in the ISSF Ranking System 2026–2028 document. Check it rather than assuming the World Ranking table applies unchanged.
The World Ranking No. 1 on 1 October 2026 was Hong Suhyeon (KOR) for men and Esha Singh (IND) for women.
- Points depend on the event and the size of the field. A World Cup win is worth 2000 with 50+ starters, 1000 with 30+, 500 with 15+. Under 15 starters: no points.
- The World Ranking is monthly and counts your best four results from a rolling 365 days.
- RPO athletes who finish in the top 8 get 9th-place points.
- The Olympic Ranking counts the best 10 results in the LA28 window and gives one place per sex to a named athlete.
